Jury Citation

“Set in the days before and after the 1995 Quebec referendum, Bottle Rocket Hearts is a compelling read that’s queer to the core. Whittall gives us a brilliant portrait of the Montreal queer community of the day, and believable, conflicted characters who live through urgent political and personal crises. In addition to possessing all of the elements that make for a successful novel - solid plot, developed characters, authentic dialogue, and enough dramatic tension to keep us turning the pages – Bottle Rocket Hearts also communicates a rare maturity in its treatment of interpersonal relationships and love. Choosing from among a long-list of excellent books, the 2008 jury is unanimous in its decision that Bottle Rocket Hearts deserves special recognition this year.” – 2008 Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ Emerging Writers Jury (Dan Bazuin, Maureen Hynes, Elizabeth Ruth)
