Balsillie Prize for Public Policy
for Pitfall: The Race to Mine the World’s Most Vulnerable Places

Jury Citation

“A timely and compelling book, Pitfall begins with a fundamental dilemma: the minerals often deemed essential for our net zero future have imposed a devastating cost on the planet and its most vulnerable peoples. By outlining the true consequences of mining, Pollon provokes a deep reflection on the political and personal implications that the industry entails. While acknowledging the need for essential metals that underpin the everyday lives of Canadians today, Pollon zags when most zig — identifying new opportunities and innovative business models that point to a more sustainable future. This book is an optimistic one, giving readers the tools to think beyond business-as-usual and imagine the sort of legacy we hope to pass down to future generations.” — 2024 Balsillie Prize for Public Policy Jury (Samantha Nutt, Taki Sarantakis, and Scott Young)
