Loblaw and the Writers’ Trust join forces to champion Canadian writers

Brampton, ON – September 20, 2012 – Loblaw Companies Limited (Loblaw) and the Writers’ Trust of Canada announced today a promotional arrangement that will see the five titles shortlisted for the prestigious 2012 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction appear in more than 200 Loblaw banner stores nationwide starting September 25.

The Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction is the richest annual literary award for a book of nonfiction published in Canada. The eventual prize winner – announced later this year – will receive $60,000.

“We know from our discussions with Canadian publishers and writers that they are absolutely thrilled at this unique opportunity to showcase their finest work to Canadian readers,” said Peter Kahnert, Writers’ Trust Chair and senior vice-president, Raymond James Ltd. “The Writers’ Trust enthusiastically welcomes this terrific commitment to Canadian writers from Loblaw.”

Loblaws® at Maple Leaf Gardens* in Toronto, Ontario, will be hosting two events to kick off the prize: a press conference on September 25 announcing the five finalists; and a book signing with the prize finalists on October 20.

Prize finalists will be selected by a three-member jury composed of James Bartleman, a writer and former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from Perth, Ontario; Charlotte Gill, a writer and past prize finalist from Powell River, British Columbia; and Marni Jackson, a writer and nonfiction writing instructor from Toronto.

About the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize

The prize is awarded for literary excellence in the category of nonfiction, which includes, among other forms, personal or journalistic essays, history, biography, memoirs, commentary, and criticism, both social and political. Finalist works will, in the opinion of the jury, demonstrate a distinctive voice, as well as a persuasive and compelling command of tone, narrative, style, and technique. This award succeeds the Writers’ Trust Nonfiction Prize, which was established in 1997.

About the Writers’ Trust
The Writers’ Trust of Canada is a charitable organization that seeks to advance, nurture, and celebrate Canadian writers and writing through a portfolio of programs, including literary awards, financial grants, scholarships, and a writers’ retreat. Writers’ Trust programming is designed to champion excellence in Canadian writing, to improve the status of writers, and to create connections between writers and readers. Canada’s writers receive more financial support from the Writers’ Trust than from any other non-governmental organization or foundation in the country.
